The Legend of Georgia McBride Reviews

"...But how can a straight dude explain to his wife that the cash he's hauling home is coming from a new line of work that involves full makeup and falsies? The plot points leading to Casey's crisis couldn't be more predictably arranged. "The Legend of Georgia McBride" makes an outrageous set-up seem completely familiar. It's still enjoyable, but don't expect many surprises."

"...Occasionally, we critics stumble onto new talents which excite the brain as well as all the other organs. Not often enough, to be sure, but it happened opening night of a funny play by Matthew Lopez, "The Legend of Georgia McBride," at the Geffen Playhouse. The play introduced us to a barely-out-of-college actor named Andrew Burnap playing a talented Elvis impersonator who just isn't bringing in audiences to this ratty bar in Panama City, Florida, but who is challenged into being a drag performer named Georgia McBride."

"...Two stars are born in the Geffen Playhouse West Coast Premiere of The Legend Of Georgia McBride. One is the Florida Panhandle drag queen whose reputation gives Matthew Lopez's crowd-pleasing comedy its name. The other is Andrew Burnap, whose revelatory performance as an Elvis impersonator who discovers a whole new love of performing portends huge things ahead for the 2016 Yale School Of Drama MFA grad."

"...Clothes may make the man, but costume designer E.B. Brooks made the clothes, and they're fantastic. They turn male bodies into female shapes, while adding whimsy. They're aided, though, by envy-inducing cellulite-free legs, as well as by the artistry with which the legs are wielded. "
