"...Directed with good humor by Guillermo Cienfuegos, the play has the low-key feel of real life - just regular people making up their lives as they go along. Fancy and Prichard are moving together, while Stevenson and Anderson bring up the comic rear. Only the flashback scene, in which a teenage Lou (Justin Preston) and a pretty young Julia (Marley McClean) tussle with mixed feelings, lacks Melocchi's usual persuasiveness."

In his turn as the gruff, cranky Lou, Fancy builds on our expectation that the character is a feeble old coot, gradually shifting him into a figure whose regret and rage are all too understandable. Prichard is unusually believable as the tragically blank Julia. Dramatically vivid work also is offered by Stevenson's glum, disappointed Steve and by Haskell Vaughn Anderson III, as a family friend who remembers all the parties when they were young."

"...PRT has an uncanny ability to cast actors that are well-suited to their roles, but these thespians, under the assured direction of Guillermo Cienfuegos, are so truthful that you may wonder if they are making up their dialogue on the spot. When Mr. Fancy has a coughing fit, I had to restrain myself from jumping out of my seat to give him a glass of water; his is a most amazing, accomplished and indelible performance. Likewise, Miss Prichard as Julia: it is truly gripping as we watch the light of her soul turn on and off when she slips in and out of reality. I promise you there was a point when I said to myself, ‘they can't possibly be acting.' Neither is it possible for Messrs. Anderson and Stevenson to emit a false note."

"...Julia is a world premiere play being presented at the Pacific Resident Theatre in Venice. It was written by Vince Melocchi (whose play Lions was published by Samuel French in 2009 and the first published play to come out of the Theatre' playwrights unit). The first-rate cast is superbly directed by Guillermo Cienfuegos. Young Lou is played by Justin Preston and Young Julia by Marley McClean in Scene II of the first act. Melocchi has written a wonderful touching play with marvelous characters, each once created perfectly by the actors. Richard Fancy is a standout as Lou."

"...The second act brings us, once again, to the autumn of 2004, where Lou finally gets his wish to visit the very much changed but still attractive Julia (Roses Pritchard). All else is for you to see for yourself. Guillermo Cienfuegos directs with an eye for detail and gives every performer a chance to shine. The acting is top notch all around, especially Fancy's portrayal of the curmudgeonly geezer, is unforgettable. Melocchi has written a really lovely play, rife with humor (supplied mostly by the irrepressible Anderson) and about the pangs of regret and guilt upon human nature. Put Julia on top of your "must see" list."
