"...ALMA puts a focus on the specific Latinx experience but at the same time, engages us all in such a way, that it's importance cannot be denied. For those of us being born, emigrating, sojourning, working and generally getting on with life in the city of Los Angeles, it is like a golden egg that's been cracked open revealing the most delicious and nutritious contents inside. Beyond being a beautifully written and produced, emotionally fulfilling piece of theater, ALMA is, in every way, absolutely life-affirming."

"...ALMA is a delightful, realistic, and telling tale of what happens when plans and cultural values cause a schism between two ladies who have always faced the world as a single unit. Told with gentle humor but also precise logic, ALMA plumbs the depths of a relationship that means the world to both. This is a coming of age story which reveals what happens when a child grows up and may have ideas of her own which come into conflict with those of her closest friend – who just happens to be her mother. But this is also the story of immigrants everywhere: how to raise a child with a foot in two cultures – when to insist that parental views represent the best interests of their offspring – and when to let go. And Alma certainly tries every parenting skill she learned – including instilling guilt, trying to manipulate, and the very funny thump of a sandal on the rump. In the end, will love win out?"

"...The play runs for 90 minutes without intermission. The language is piquant and entertaining, the acting (of two overacting character types) superb and non-stop with barely a pause for breath, in fact panic-inducing. Juliette Carrillo’s direction is word-and gesture-perfect. There’s much repetition—the deseos, the SAT scores, the flashcards, the dietary concerns, the nightmares—and I felt like the playwright had already been there, said that two or three times too many already. At the same time, the arc of the play is simple and direct, without detours, twists, great surprises, or revelations, so while I could be ecstatic about these two mesmerizing talents on stage, I felt less enthusiastic about the material itself which did not soar above predictable expectations."

Her passionate and heartbreaking performance as a terrified mother faced with the possibility of having her dreams shattered is riveting. As her daughter, Angel, Sabrina Fest shows tremendous range of emotion, especially during her “panic attack” scene. The Kirk Douglas Theater should be commended for offering such a vital platform to different versions of “American experience.”"
