Stage and Cinema- Somewhat Recommended
"...Rather than relying on high-tech stage trickery, Geer and set designer Michael Klock lean into theatrical simplicity. Bristol Port and the Admiral Benbow Inn transform into the Hispaniola and a mysterious Caribbean island so quickly and so deftly that one transformation is already complete before you’ve registered the last. Chairs, barrels, netting, and benches are arranged in an arc to suggest the gunwale of the ship, while the inn’s upper balcony becomes the captain’s deck."

"...Dialog scenes get bogged down in nautical jargon, 18th-century slang, and outdated grammar, much of it unintelligible to 21st-century ears, but whenever action sequences take over, Theatricum Botanicum audiences are treated to the swashbucklingest adventure story ever to unfold under Topanga skies."

"...Stevenson’s tale of mutinous buccaneers and hidden treasure has all the components for a great adventure story. However, brevity is the soul of adaptation, and Geer’s slavish adherence to the source material results in an overlong and tedious recapitulation rather than the gutsy, sea-faring yarn it was meant to be."

"...Running about three hours in length, the pace of Treasure Island proves to be one of its weaker points. While pirate songs and cannon flashes amuse in ample doses, the plot itself becomes occasionally muddied as loyalties shift and lives end in rapid succession. The politics of piracy would likely benefit from a slight shaving."
