Three Coconuts Reviews
Stage and Cinema- Somewhat Recommended
"...A domineering Jewish mother, her sharp-tongued teenage son, three oddball suitors, a hippie pimp, and two Chicago cops walk onto a stage. Chaos follows. The question is whether the play knows when to stop pressing the joke."
Stage Raw- Not Recommended
"...Co-writers/directors Howard Teichman’s and Steven G. Simon’s heartfelt but scattershot comedy is based on an episode from Teichman’s teenage years. Teichman’s pre-curtain announcement informs the audience that what transpires on stage is what really happened. While truth may be stranger than fiction, it is not always funnier, due to the show’s stereotyped characters, clunky exposition, and strained attempts at humor."

"...There exists a uniquely acute embarrassment that can only be inflicted on a child by a well-intentioned parent. In Three Coconuts, a world premiere comedy presented by West Coast Jewish Theatre, Ida Blumenthal (Dana Weisman) is one such exuberantly punishing mother. Ida visits inadvertent humiliation upon her teenage son, Sammy (Zachary Nemes), when she puts an advertisement in the local Jewish newspaper inviting eligible bachelors to her Shabbat dinner. Three gentlemen – or “coconuts,” as Ida’s brother, Irving (Shelly Kurtz), terms them – take her up on the offer."

"...Written and directed by Howard Teichman and Steven G. Simon, the world premiere comedy Three Coconuts is based on true events that happened in Teichman’s life as a young boy. And after sharing the memory “with Steve about what happened, he thought the event would be the making of a very funny comedy.”"
