Set in Chicago in 1968 during the Democratic National Convention, Three Coconuts follows Ida Blumenthal in Albany Park as she prepares a Shabbat dinner-and a possible fresh start. With her husband gone, Ida places an ad in the Jewish newspaper The Forward and invites three quirky suitors to her apartment, which her brother Irving dubs the "Three Coconuts." But when vice cops investigate her upstairs neighbor's secret bordello, Ida, her young son Sammy, and the would-be husbands risk getting swept into trouble that was never on the menu.
