Latino Theater Company, in association with San Francisco's Magic Theatre and resident home company Campo Santo, presents the newest work by MacArthur Foundation "Genius Grant" recipient Luis Alfaro. Humorous and poignant, The Travelers takes place in a monastery alongside Highway 99 in Grangeville, California, population 496 and home to migrant workers. When a stranger stumbles in with a gunshot wound, he is nursed by the brothers of the 936-year-old Carthusian Order - even as the Archdiocese is cutting financial support, casting a shadow. Funny and heartfelt, filled with ritual and absurd touches, The Travelers explores the brothers' struggles against poverty and the complexities of human connection.

"..."The Travelers" doesn't always make sense as it plays out. There is room for subtler modulation in the script and the staging. But Alfaro's work grows in meaning in retrospect. Seeds are planted that flower in the imagination after the show has ended and we resume our own journeys in this world of permanent change."

"...The calendar listings for Luis Alfaro's The Travelers, currently playing at the Los Angeles Theatre Center, say "We are all travelers, Brother. Our journeys take place inside." The trouble is that journeys presented on the stage should not only be inside, but also aesthetical and active and must be treated as such to make a viable dramatic presentation. As I watched and listened to the series of speeches voiced by this talented group of actors, I felt like I was more at a spoken word coffee house than a theater."

Yet just when you think Alfaro has terminally erased any hope for the future of mankind, the naive and sheltered Ogie, lifelong resident of his filthy old clawfoot tub, delivers a brilliantly gossamer and lyrical monologue explaining from his perspective the nature of human emotion and the profundity of love."
