The Play That Goes Wrong
Stage and Cinema- Highly Recommended
"...The Tony Award-winning The Play That Goes Wrong, also crowned Best New Comedy at the 2015 Olivier Awards, is a sidesplitting Broadway hit written by Mischief Theatre's Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer, and Henry Shields. At La Mirada Theatre in Hackensack (kidding...it's in La Mirada), meet the hapless Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society, whose attempt to stage a 1920s murder mystery goes spectacularly, hilariously awry. As the title suggests, everything that can possibly go wrong does-on an epic scale. From collapsing sets to botched cues, each calamitous mishap builds on the last, delivering an unstoppable cascade of guffaw-inducing pandemonium. This is the central focus of the play, um, that goes wrong."

"...Skillfully directed by Eric Petersen, THE PLAY THAT GOES WRONG goes hysterically right for the audience, whose chuckles soon morph into guffaws and uncontrolled laughter. The farcical goings-on will tickle the funny bone of every audience member as the impossibly inept Cornley crew try to master the workings of a real-live theater production. Kudos to the cast, who are pretty athletically inclined as they struggle to dangle from collapsing walls and caved-in furniture. With excellent timing, the farce proceeds on its uproarious and entertaining journey."

"...Everything goes right where laughter is concerned in The Play That Goes Wrong, the West End-to-Broadway comedy smash that that just might set a laughs-per-minute record at the La Mirada Theatre."

"...Director Eric Peterson manages to deliver a near-perfectly timed production as demanded by the farcical disaster. Costumes by Adam Ramirez are delightfully period perfect. Lighting and sound by the talented Steven Young and Josh Bessom are essential for the execution of many moments in the play. Credit is also due to wig designer Kaitlin Hagen and fight coordinator Michael Polak for verisimilitude. But it is scenic designer Czerton Lim who steals the show with the management of his collapsing set and clever stage effects from the original production."

"...Filled with non-stop, over-the-top comedy that seems to just keep ratcheting up at every turn, THE PLAY THAT GOES WRONG-a new So. Cal. regional production from McCoy Rigby Entertainment that continues performances through February 16, 2025 at the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts-is, by design, one of the funniest, most gut-busting productions one will ever have to experience in a live theatre."
