We're starting our 2022-2023 50th Anniversary season by celebrating a most notable Theatre landmark by opening Agatha Christie's THE MOUSETRAP on the 70th anniversary of the original production's debut at the Theatre Royal in Nottingham, which premiered on October 6, 1952. Except for an interruption brought on by COVID-19, the play has been running continuously over a period of seven decades. Whether you've never seen THE MOUSETRAP until now, or even made the trip to the West End to see the play where it started, be prepared for classic Christie on the Group Rep stage!

In fact, the tradition for secrecy has grown over the years – so that now, at the conclusion of each performance, the audience is sometimes told not to disclose how the play ends so that future audiences can also enjoy the surprising conclusion. Set at Monkswell Manor, proprietors Mollie and Giles Ralston (Tavish Grade and Todd Andrew Ball) are welcoming the first guests to their newly established bed and breakfast inn. Even as they hustle and bustle to get ready, a radio announcer intones breaking news about an unexplained murder in the city – obviously a story that has nothing to do with them – or does it'"

"...Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap, the longest running play in the world, is a tremendously successful whodunnit for a reason—perhaps you can crack the case' A story of seven strangers stranded by a blizzard in a hotel and informed by a detective that a murderer hellbent on revenge is in their midst, it has all the familiar elements of an old-fashioned murder mystery; red herrings and tweed jackets abound. The Group Rep’s production, directed by Jules Aaron, is a faithful, often campy rendition that turns out to be much more comical than it is dark and suspenseful. Although the pace can feel sluggish at times and the faltering English accents a little distracting, it’s still worth seeing for its classically structured plot and cozily nostalgic appeal."

"...I was not going to pass up an opportunity to see Agatha Christie's The Mousetrap in October-- a time when we'd all like to be a little frightened by our entertainment-- and seeing it on the seventieth anniversary of its London premiere was a delightful bonus. In truth, even as a huge fan of the mystery genre, and admittedly a fan of Agatha Christie, I've only read and never seen The Mousetrap. I was immediately blown away by how well the play has held up in all of its 70 years. The suspense is weaponized to keep the audience engaged throughout and the dialogue, characters, and revelations of clues are (forgive the shock) actually quite good."
