Souvenir depicts American heiress Florence Foster Jenkins (1868-1944), who pursued a career as a classical concert singer despite a conspicuous lack of musical ability. She attracted an enormous following of fans nonetheless, drawn to her enthusiasm if not her talent. (Think of William Hung on "American Idol" a few seasons ago.) Ms. Jenkins' accompanist was Cosme McMoon, who would make faces behind her back during shows. She made it to Carnegie Hall, finally, one month before her death.
