"...The play is set in a bunker beneath the Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol, Ukraine, during the 2022 siege as Russian forces sought to capture the strategic complex. Trapped under relentless bombardment are Vitaliy (James Morris), a young Jewish lieutenant in the Ukrainian Marines with an obsession for the works of J.R.R. Tolkien; Olha (Jasmine Kimiko), a sub-captain in the Azov Regiment of the Ukrainian National Guard, deeply scarred by her experiences at the hands of the invaders; and their prisoner, Yevgeny (Chris Reiling), a captured Russian soldier who continually tests his captors’ humanity."

"...Ukraine was still officially part of the Soviet Union when The Lord of the Rings was first published in Russia in 1982. Its mythology quickly gained popularity in both places, and this compounded in the 1990s when tough times in both countries propelled people to escape into worlds of fantasy. Then came the Russian invasion in 2022; in Ukraine, the notion of Russia as interchangeable with the bleak volcanic land of Mordor that Tolkien conjured in his books became widespread. Likewise, the likening of Russian soldiers to Tolkien’s fierce humanoid monsters, known as orcs, seized the public imagination."
