In the classic comedy ROOM SERVICE, Gordon Miller a theatrical director, and his ragtag bunch of actors have run up a huge bill at the hotel run by his brother-in-law. With the hotel auditor on the way and no means to pay, the troupe plans to make a run for it...until a mysterious financial backer is discovered. The only problem is, the Company needs to stay put for a few more days until the deal can be finalized! They decide to have the naive, country playwright fake a serious illness so he cannot be evicted. As events unfold, high anxiety and hilarity ensue...

"...Co-directors Bjørn Johnson and Ron Orbach, each of whom on the night reviewed stepped into roles normally played by a single cast member, maintain the proceedings at a heady clip, as their company of 13 rides a roller coaster of machinations and split-second timing. Nowhere is this more evident than in the work of Derek Manson, playing the group's harried director. Manson brings a crisp, never-down-for-long air to what might otherwise be just bellowing histrionics. Besides, that trait is on ample display thanks to the hilarious performance of Charles Dennis as the hotel's accounting auditor who has discovered the horrendously overdue bill owed by this theatrical band."

"...That being said, for what it does, the Open Fist does well. The entire production, as usual, from direction (by Bjorn Johnson and Ron Orbach) and acting, to sets (by Victoria Profitt), costumes (by A. Jeffrey Schoenberg) and lighting (by Jason Mullen) and are all very professional. Manson, in particular, successfully mimics the 30s acting style. But it is Liss and Eastman who actually outperform their film counterparts. (It helps that they are playing roles not portrayed by a Marx Brother.)"

Snappy dialogue and screwball comedy keep us from focusing on drawn-out scheme. Pitch perfect casting, snazzy set (Victoria Profitt), cool costumes (A. Jeffrey Schoenberg) and hot hair (Kristen Shaw). Wise-cracking characters who defy penurious situation to put on a show actually inspire us during our own economic hardship. Hats off to Open Fist Theatre Company, you made me blow my wig and forget my troubles."

"...Derek Manson's take on Gordon is to give us contained focus; what can go wrong does, but so do his reparative skills when they kick into play. Dustin Eastman as Leo Davis, the naïve playwright who surprises his director by showing up at all, with nary a dollar in his pocket, is genuinely touching, while showing a farceur's skill in playing up his fear of failure and his falling in love with the mandatory love-interest (Jessica Noboa), who gets the period style as well as anybody else."
