"... If the production's freshly minted Asian currency gets "whitewashed" into the regional idiosyncrasies of Mississippi, it says little new about the play, and even less about the assimilation of cultures. Rather, its reason for being would appear to be casting opportunities for these excellent actors, and this well-staged production becomes just an exercise for those who wish to be entertained once again by the tender absurdity of the McGrath sisters. For those who have deeper hungers, however, it's a missed opportunity to utilize this company's talent."

"...Under Leslie Ishii's spot-on direction, this stellar trio of leading ladies resist the all-too-easy temptation to overdo the Southern and overplay the Quirky that can turn quirky Southern characters into caricatures. Liang, Gelman, and Erskine make Lenny, Meg, and Babe about as real as real can be, and all the funnier for being authentic human beings whom we recognize and care about. That they look different from the original Broadway trio (Lizbeth MacKay, Mary Beth Hurt, and Mia Dillon) or their better known movie counterparts (Diane Keaton, Jessica Lange, and Sissy Spacek) matters not a whit, other than to make the East West production even more of a must-see."

"...Ishii's one-of-a-kind direction allows the play to build up to its frenzied climax before relaxing back to normalcy. The air is slow and monotonous at first, although we are quite entertained by Lenny blowing out her candles repeated, and also touched by her meaningless affairs and helpless life. However, when Meg enters the scene, her infectious personality draws us in, and we are even more enchanted by Babe as she tells her ridiculous story. Each character in the play is liberated in some way, and Ishii's slow build-up of the story makes the final result all the more satisfying."
