The Treatment

Boston Court Performing Arts Center
70 N. Mentor Ave. Pasadena

The Treatment, an adaptation of Chekhov’s story, “Ward 6.” This production is a collaboration between The Theatre @ Boston Court and Theatre Movement Bazaar. Conceived by Alger + Kronis, text by Richard Alger, directed and choreographed by Tina Kronis. Who draws the line between sanity and insanity? In this new work of visceral, movement-based storytelling, the complacent doctor of a remote mental hospital befriends a philosophizing madman, but as the doctor’s worldview is upended, society’s prescription is to make him a patient in his own ward. Chekhov’s investigation of people in positions of power and those they hold captive ignites with intense physicality fused with ironic humor, dance, and song.

Los Angeles Times - Somewhat Recommended

"...The creators clearly prefer bounding gestures to workaday words, but the ensuing theatricality doesn’t accrue enough resonance. The piece has a hectic sportiveness that can be entertaining in a tilt-a-whirl fashion, but it doesn’t lead us very deep into Chekhov’s all-seeing social critique."

Backstage - Recommended

"...Thankfully, there’s plenty of sly wit and food for thought in this wacky but incisive view of a cuckoo’s nest, and Chekhov’s trenchant social commentary still rings true."

"...Presented in collaboration with Theatre Movement Bazaar, this Boston Court world premiere is part vaudeville, part crew jam and part prose jam session. This is where live theater is fun and fascinating."

CurtainUp - Not Recommended

"...The innovative approach of creative (and married) partners Tina Kronis and Richard Alger provides a potential cure for the theatrical ills of staid, conventional story-telling. Without plumbing the depths of Chekhov’s tale or making a striking case for their particular take on it, The Treatment provides little lingering after-effect beyond an estimable respect for the talent on display in buckets (literally and figuratively) and a fervid wish to see what phantasmagoria the creators come up with next."

LA Stage Times - Somewhat Recommended

"...The connection between the movement and material is weaker in The Treatment than it was in Anton’s Uncles. Here, the movement doesn’t add an additional means of expression to these characters so much as it adds an additional forum of expression for Kronis."

Opening the Curtain - Somewhat Recommended

"...If you’re interested in a single play – this one disappoints. The style doesn’t support the 90 minutes or help focus the story to its emotional core."

The Stage Struck Review - Recommended

"...“The Treatment” is innovative theater, but then that’s what both companies involved with this production are all about. It’s a chance to encounter less-well-known Chekhov, which for me is always a singular delight. More than that, images from this piece will hum in your head afterward, as great storytelling always does, allowing the nuances in the cracks between sentences to shine ever more brightly. This is, by definition, the kind of thing theater can do which no other medium can match."
