"...The large cast, headed by Michael Matthys as Mama Rose's browbeaten swain, Eric Allen Smith as the young song-and-dance man Tulsa and Kelly Swanson as Mama Rose's other daughter, Dainty June, provides fine support, along with veteran performers Larry Lederman and Tony Pandolfo. Sara J. Stuckey, Kelly Jean Cuir and Jessica Schatz score as the strippers who sing "You Gotta Get a Gimmick." Johanna Kent's music direction and John Todd's choreography keep things lively."

"...Gypsy at West Coast Ensemble should prove manna from heaven for musical theater lovers in the mood for something other than yet another revival of Little Shop, Funny Forum, Pippin, or Cabaret (not that there's anything wrong with any of them, but enough is enough … please). That Gypsy just happens to be one of the greatest Broadway musicals of all times (and that even "stripped," it's still one hell of a show) makes this a production that no true musical theater buff will want to miss."

"...The overture, and much of the music, was more than a disappointment, it was a disaster, with lots of ugly notes and false rhythms. Some songs like "Some People" worked well but whether it was lack of rehearsal or just bad musicianship, the orchestra stank. It would have been better to use a prerecorded tape (certainly not in vogue considering the flap over Pricilla on Broadway) but with a tape and a pianist the songs would have been better served."
