A useless braggart, Peer is driven from his hometown for trying to corrupt Solveig, a beautiful young maid who loves Peer and follows him into exile. Peer gets drunk and encounters the Troll King, the dreaded Boyg, the Sphinx, and many unsavory characters. An old man, Peer returns to Solveig and his mother, begging forgiveness for a wasted life.
