The experience begins the moment you check-in. All audience members are encouraged to take part in our immersive preshow where you can freely explore the asylum, interact with the characters, take "medication," and discover the secrets of the ward and those who inhabit it. Once the performance of ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST commences, audiences can choose between two different viewing experiences. "Acute Patients" sit on stage and will have the opportunity to interact with the characters and the space during the performance. "Chronic Patients" will be stationary throughout the performance and will enjoy the show from a more traditional theatrical vantage point.

"...When I first heard about After Hours Theatre Company presenting a unique immersive experience of ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST, I knew I had to there to experience what it must really be like to be a patient in the Psych Ward with the loony characters in Dale Wasserman's adaptation of Ken Kesey's novel, produced by Graham Wetterhahn and directed by Jonathan Muñoz-Proulx. Of course, I had seen the movie starring Jack Nicholson, as well as several staged productions, but the idea of actually being able to interact with the Cuckoo's Nest characters intrigued me to the max. And I was not disappointed."

"...The transformation of this large rehabilitated industrial room is amazing. Under the aegis of director Jonathan Muñoz-Proulx - and the hyperactive imagination of "Immersive Experience" designer Sarah Ashley Beil - the design is that of a realistic psych ward's recreation room, with a nurse's station looming at one end. Admire set designer Victoria Tam's stained walls and Shen Heckel's amazingly authentic props before the show, because Andrew Schmedake's lights become the central design element, utilizing over 150 Edison filament bulbs that flicker with precision under the control of stage manager Summer Grubaugh."

"...Essentially, while boasting a top-notch immersive prologue, this is mostly a show performed ala theatre in the round. "Chronic Patients" are audience members who stay on the safe and slightly distant seating around the perimeter. "Acute Patients" get to jump right in to group meetings and other moments, while acting as veritable free labor background actors. It's a brilliant choice, and after seeing this production I can no longer conceive of Cuckoo's Nest staged in a traditional way."
