The Lion King in Los Angeles

The Lion King will return to the Los Angeles area and play at the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood from February 2, 2023 through March 26, 2023. The North American touring productions of The Lion King have been seen by more than 20 million theatergoers.

The Lion King continues to be a hugely popular show. Nearly 110 million people have seen 25 productions worldwide since the premiere of The Lion King on November 13, 1997. The Lion King was produced by Disney Theatrical Productions under the direction of Thomas Schumacher. Six productions were worldwide that ran for 15 years or more, and four of them ran for 20 years or more.

The Lion King has been performed in nine languages over its lifetime (English, Japanese German, Korean French, Dutch Spanish, Mandarin and Portuguese); on Broadway; London's West End, Paris; Hamburg; Tokyo and Madrid; and on tour across North America and Japan. A separate production is also touring internationally. There are ten simultaneous productions across the globe. The worldwide gross of The Lion King is greater than any other film, Broadway show, or entertainment title. It has played in more than 100 cities on 21 continents, except Antarctica.

The Tony Awards for 1998 included Best Musical, Best Scenic Design (Richard Hudson), best Costume Design (Julie Taymor), best Lighting Design (Donald Holder), best Choreography (Garth Fagan), and the Best Direction of A Musical. The Lion King also won more than 70 major arts awards, including the 1998 NY Drama Critics Circle Award, the 1999 Grammy, the 1999 Evening Standard Award, the 1999 Evening Standard Award, the 1999 Evening Standard Award, the 1999 Evening Standard Award, the 1999 Evening Standard Award, and the 1999 Laurence Olivier Awards, for Best Choreography, and the Best Costume Design.

Julie Taymor, the show's director and costume designer, continues to be a key part of the show's continued success. Taymor, the first woman to receive a Tony Award in Direction of a Musical for her work, oversees productions around the globe.
