Open House

Two lonely souls meet in a place where nothing is quite as it appears. Shem Bitterman's compelling World Premiere Open House tells the story of a hotshot real estate salesman who has an overpriced house he needs to unload and a seductive, mysterious woman seems to be his best bet. It's all in the sale.

It's Holiday time in the California home buying season, traditionally a slow time when most potential home-buyers are out seeing movies, shopping, eating out or visiting with friends or family. Yet that's precisely the time real estate agent Chuck Baker has elected to sell a difficult, emotional house - one with plenty of charm but unfortunately only one bathroom. His most solid prospect is Martha Tucker, a recent arrival to the Golden State, a woman with a discerning eye who is only worried that "something wrong" has happened in the house. Of course, feelings are subjective. But in this case, are they? Or is it Chuck himself that Martha is responding to?

Shem Bitterman (Playwright) is having his third production staged at the Skylight Theatre under artistic director Gary Grossman. His numerous award-winning plays include; A Death in Colombia, Influence, Harm's Way, man.gov,, Sensitive Skin, The Circle, AKA (adaptation), The Job, Justice, Night-Side, Peephole, Robinson & Caruso (adaptation), The Ramp, Beijing Legends, Self Storage, and Ten Below. Films include: The Job, Play Dead, Full Count, Off The Lip, Tinsletown, Peephole and Out Of The Rain. Recently, his movie Betty & Coretta, starring Angela Bassett, Mary J. Blige and Ruby Dee aired on Lifetime.

Steve Zuckerman (Director) helmed the Broadway production of Nuts by Tom Topor, which received two Tony nominations and two Drama Desk awards. At the Skylight Theatre, he directed the world premieres of Influence and A Death In Columbia. His work with Israel Horovitz includes his Canadian Triolgy, Unexpected Tenderness and North Shore which received a number of Drama Desk nods and which he directed for Showtime starring Mercedes Rhuel, Peter Riegert and Tony Danza. Mr. Zuckerman has directed over 350 episodes of prime time television including Golden Girls, Empty Nest, Friends, Murphy Brown, Everyone Loves Raymond and Anger Management He has taught at Julliard, Circle in the Square and USC.
