The Fountain Theatre has extended the run of Bakersfield Mist, the world premiere of a new comedy about art, through September 3.

Written and directed by Fountain co-artistic director Stephen Sachs and starring real-life husband and wife actors Jenny O'Hara and Nick Ullett, Bakersfield Mist is a lively and thought-provoking comedy inspired by true events. Maude Gutman, an unemployed, foul mouthed ex-bartender living in a run down California trailer park, believes the painting she bought in a thrift store for $3 is really an undiscovered masterpiece worth millions. When stuffy New York art expert Lionel Percy arrives to evaluate the work, a fiery battle erupts over class, truth, value, and the meaning of art.

A Los Angeles Times 'Critic's Choice' ("It's exhilarating in the extreme when a world premiere strikes rich on every conceivable level"), a Back Stage Critic's Pick ("absorbing, hilarious... a triumph"), and a "GO" in the LA Weekly ("[directed with] an abundance of spirit... outstanding actors"), Bakersfield Mist has also been hailed as ""A delight... one of the breeziest comedies I've laughed my way through in far too long a time" (Stage and Cinema); "absolutely captivating" (Stage Scene LA); "a laugh riot" (Examiner); and "entertaining and provocative" (Buzzine). The Park La Brea News/Beverly Press called Bakersfield Mist "another plum for the Fountain's tree of generally luscious art" and OnStageLosAngeles declared it "a brilliant new play."

Earning rave reviews and sold-out houses at the Fountain in Los Angeles, Bakersfield Mist has drawn national attention. Supported in part by the National New Play Network's Continued Life of New Plays Fund, regional productions of Bakersfield Mist are set to open at Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theatre in Wellfleet, MA on August 11; at New Jersey Repertory in Long Branch, NJ on December 1; and at the New Repertory Theatre in Waterford, MA on February 26.

Set design for Bakersfield Mist is by Jeff McLaughlin; lighting design is by Ken Booth; costume design is by Shon LeBlanc; sound design is by Peter Bayne; fight choreography is by Doug Lowry; prop design is by Misty Carlisle; and the production stage manager is Terri Roberts. Bakersfield Mist is produced by Simon Levy and Deborah Lawlor and is a presentation of The Fountain Theatre and the National New Play Network.
