Welcome to Bluefish Cove. The Fountain Theatre will transform the parking lot surrounding the set on its outdoor stage to create an oceanfront experience for its 40th anniversary production of the groundbreaking drama, Last Summer at Bluefish Cove by Jane Chambers. Set in 1974, a group of queer women spend their summers together in a remote oceanfront town on Long Island. Their lesbian enclave is disrupted when Eva, a naïve straight woman recently separated from her husband, stumbles unaware into their circle and falls for the charming, tough-talking Lil. This heartfelt play, a landmark in lesbian history, is bursting with friendship, laughter, love and hope, bringing well-rounded, three-dimensional characters that transcend stereotypes and preconceptions to the stage.

"...By far, the most amazing thing about this production is the setting in The Fountain Theatre's parking lot. With the sun beginning its descent at the top of the show (all performances are at 7pm), and with a backdrop of flora swaying in the chilly breeze, it's a setting that could only be topped by actually being at the beach (the fantastic setting of a cutaway cabin is by Desma Murphy)."

"...But this play has even more substance than just a sentimental story. It captures the little known safe heavens where lesbians have retreated for support and reaffirmation of their values. It is also a snapshot of the challenging post-Stonewall times when the LGBT communities were fighting for equality in a society that persistently excluded them from their agendas. These stories need to be told to really comprehend the diversity of the human condition and, hopefully, serve as a channel for mutual respect and understanding."
