Kaiju Reviews
Stage and Cinema- Highly Recommended
"...Has the spark seemed to have left the LA theater scene? Does a night at the theater mean a choice between commercial dreck or heavy messaging? Are you weary of your thoughts being provoked yet again? Well, consider adding some Japanese-style strange beasts to your life via Dan Caffrey's wild new play, KAIJU, now in North Hollywood at The Road Theatre Company, co-produced with BroadStage."

"...Playwright Dan Caffrey may have bitten off a bit more than he can chew in Kaiju, his satirical mashup of Godzilla-style creature features and pretentions/clueless post-performance talkbacks, but I so enjoyed the World Premiere comedy now playing at the Road Theatre on Magnolia that I can't really complain."

"...One of the things I appreciate about The Road Theatre is that it's not afraid to go big and try different stuff. Over the past couple of decades, The Road has produced shows about dragons, demons, vampires, ghosts, Lovecraftian entities and underserved literary characters taking control of their stories, along with plenty of excellent but less outre fare. I go to The Road because its quality is consistent, it puts on compelling plays, and, for lack of a better word - it's fun. This leads me to its current show (a co-production with BroadStage), Dan Caffrey's Kaiju, a story at least partly about giant monsters destroying Los Angeles. It's a wildly creative piece that is sharp and funny, brilliantly directed by Ken Sawyer and skillfully performed by a terrific cast."

"...Kaiju has the full package, as every design element is firing on all cylinders. Of particular note is the delightfully intricate, and even surprising set design (Lacey Anzelc) and prop design (Danna Hyams & Ken Sawyer.) And the creature body-suits, designed by Shealyn Biron and Lee Diemer, are just shy of looking like they could fit right into the Kaiju universe."
Broadway World- Somewhat Recommended
"...Dan Caffrey's new play, directed by Ken Sawyer in a co-production between the Road and BroadStage, depicts actors performing a play about conscious-stricken yet randy monsters destroying the city which is followed by a post-performance discussion by "audience members" about the play we've all just witnessed. After which, there comes a twist that makes the experience feel positively ouroboros-ian (I may not have used that term correctly, but damn it!, it's close. Plus Tom Jacobson's play OUROBOROS, also had its world premiere at the Road back in 2004, so there's that.)"
