The latest adaptation of the novel that inspired the visionary film Blade Runner comes to the stage, courtesy of Sacred Fools and complete with edgy elements including simulated gunfire and nudity. Philip K. Dick's seminal 1968 sci-fi noir is set in a post-nuclear dystopia and tracks the adventures of bounty hunter Rick Deckard, who questions his own humanity as he's tasked with hunting down and killing fugitive androids that may be hatching a plan for a robot revolution. Directed by the award-winning Jaime Robledo, this West Coast premiere of playwright Edward Einhorn's work follows its initial 2010 run at the 3LD Art and Technology Center in Manhattan.

"...Jaime Robledo's inventively cinematic staging (on DeAnne Millais' computer-detritus set) and an unusually fine ensemble (including Lynn Odell, Corey Klemow, Marz Richards and Rafael Goldstein) capture all the nuanced terms of Dick's allegory. But the real discovery of the evening is Kimberly Atkinson and her subtly delineated dual turn as the doppelgangers Rachael Rosen and Pris Stratton."

"...As dull as its premise is exciting, Jaime Robledo's production of Edward Einhorn's 2010 play, adapted from Philip K. Dick's novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep', could not be further divorced from its source. The novel is a philosophical visit to the defining boundaries of human nature, and (like most of Mr. Dick's work) of reality itself. Mr. Einhorn's play, while trying to cram onstage as many ideological questions as it can, blithely places the book's weakest element - its pat noir storyline - front and center. So the play's a mess of ideas with an A to B plot that neatly resolves its conflicts while elucidating few of its concepts. Mr. Robledo does not help by directing his actors to sleepwalk and then pacing the show accordingly."

"...At Sacred Fools, helmer Jaime Robledo creates some arresting visuals, and engages Anthony Backman and Ben Rock to pull off jazzy projection wizardry. Unfortunately, either Robledo didn't instruct his actors to absorb enough film noir technique or they weren't up to the task. Most of his thesps are stuck in either drippily naturalistic or campily satirical modes, neither mode especially deft or interesting."
