A trio of Orishas (entities of the spirit world), dismayed and enraged at the state of the world today and the fates of African Americans in particular, convenes the spirits of famous departed Black iconic figures (among them Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Ida B. Wells, James Baldwin, Lorraine Hansberry, Maya Angelou, Richard Pryor, Tupac Shakur, Nina Simone, and more). What follows is A Heated Discussion. Viewpoints, comments, and solutions are as diverse as the individuals comprising this combustible mix of personalities.

"...A HEATED DISCUSSION is a powerful piece of theater – creative, engrossing, and thought-provoking. Given the large cast, director Guillory does a yeoman’s job of herding the cats into one barrel while making sure that each individual maintains his own personality and emotional center. Happily, he is ably assisted by a very talented acting crew who skillfully draw both laughter and tears from the audience. The audience’s periodical claps during the show which was reviewed revealed just how much the viewers were emotionally involved in the performances. The show will especially appeal to anyone interested in the history of the black movement – or even in history more generally."

"...Supporting this ambitious enterprise, Robey veteran designer Evan A Bartroletti creates a heavenly, gauzy plane where Orishas dwell, while the spirits must mill about in a decorative garden reminiscent of Eden. And on that note, as director, Guillory works wonders, keeping his large cast constantly in motion while the discussion, mostly cerebral, takes place. Naila Aladdin Sanders' costumes pay close attention to the real-life wardrobes of the characters, and Benedict Conran's lighting helps unite heaven and earth. Other notable assistance comes from composer Cydney Wayne Davis, choreographer Jan Bouldin Blunt, and graphic designer Jason Mimms."

Their co-founders, Ben Guillory (Artistic Director) and Danny Glover, have responded to the history and the everyday lives of BIPOC Americans with powerful works on the stage. When going to see a play titled A Heated Discussion, this is what their audience can expect to see. When there is no veil of fictional narrative, they can expect their own experience to play part in the discussion."
