When white abolitionist John Brown stormed Harper's Ferry in 1859, the 19 men by his armed side were ready to fight to the death to free the slaves of Virginia ... and many of them did just that. The only survivor of the raid, Osborne P. Anderson, kept a number of journals that were a chronicle of the black men that fought alongside Brown over the course of the events that many consider the catalyst for the Civil War. Mining these historical occurrences for their inherent and timeless drama, Ted Lange's The Journals of Osborne P. Anderson also manages moments of levity, finding comedy as it deconstructs some of the stereotypes so rampant in the pre-Civil War South. This show is recommended for ages 15 and older.
