"California Dreamin'," a new play, explores the events leading up to the infamous Tate-LaBianca murders and their aftermath. It suggests the friendship between Charles Manson and coffee heiress and murder victim Abigail Folger, a relationship denied by official accounts of the incident and further suggests a calculated cover-up to shield the dead woman's reputation. The meticulously researched narrative is written by Jill Charlotte Thomas and directed by L. Flint Esquerra. Paul Koslo and Gabrieal Griego produce for the MET Theatre.

"...However, the show sometimes resembles an American College Theatre Festival entry on LSD. That's understandable, given the property's identity issues, here a sociological treatise, there a psychological study of attracted opposites. "California Dreamin'" warrants attention, also further rewrites."

"...Instead I am left with disappointment. California Dreamin' is maddeningly reductive, reducing its own interesting central idea to a mélange of exposition and perfunctory declarations of drug-induced euphoria.The characters babble about how they feel, without ever having interactions that might make us feel something. Telling us how in love you are isn't the same as experiencing love and letting us in on that experience."

"...For me, the performances were pretty flat. The production emulates the look and sound of the 60s Flower Power culture, and the actors certainly display the behavior of drugged out hippies, but the performances on the whole lack credibility. I simply didn't feel transported."
