If you get low on cash, you can sell blood. But if you're the U.S. circa 2017, it'll take selling off an entire state just to make ends meet. At least that's the brilliantly twisted logic at play in young playwright Ken Ferigni's acclaimed new satire Occupation, in which crushing national debt compels the U.S. government to sell the entire state of Florida to China to the tune of $5 trillion dollars. Soon the newly formed South Florida Christian Militia launches an insurgency in the Everglades to oust the Chinese. But just how far will they go to keep the United States united? Ferigni blends "redneck caricature with hip-hop anarchy and giddy pessimism to create a suicide vest of a satire" (New York Magazine) in this darkly comedic dystopia, which now comes to L.A.'s Sacred Fools Theater.
