A jazz-filled score brings to life the story of a love triangle between two musicians and their muse in Miravel from Sacred Fools Theater Company. In this Cyrano-esque tale, reclusive jazz composer Alphonso Bloch falls for the beautiful dancer Miravel and is inspired to write for her. But when Miravel turns her attentions elsewhere, Alphonso sacrifices his own love and gives his music to his best friend, singer Henry Brooks, to woo her. Mixing original tunes with jazz standards, Miravel shows how an artist's greatest obstacle to creation can often be himself. Ovation and LA Drama Critics Circle Award winner Jake Broder wrote and stars in this world premiere musical. This show is recommended for ages 10 and up.

"...Whenever the book takes over the heavy lifting, however, Miravel's flames - along with much of its romance - are all but smothered. Director Shaunessy Quinn doesn't help matters by directing key courtship scenes with Chumrau sidelined in the shadows. But the more fundamental trouble is that Broder retains Cyrano's outlandishly contrived artifices but substitutes the warmth and buoyancy Rostand used to sell them with Hesse's heavy cerebral solemnity and characters that are curiously charmless and unlovable."

"...It's a story that takes too long to tell but the jazz sizzles and MIRAVEL definitely has potential. Billed as a jazz musical by Jake Broder, co-author of the hit musical Louis and Keely, Live at the Sahara, it really falls under the 'play with songs' category, currently more talk than music. Broder's compositions are expertly written, easily capturing the improvisational style of Monk and the sophistication of Ellington. They are, at the moment, one of the few places where passion authentically ignites in this spin on the Cyrano tale."
