Shakespeare's Macbeth is one of his most famous works -- a supernatural tale of regicide and manipulation so violent and grim that the play is rumored to be cursed. Macbeth Revisited is a bare-boned, gender-bending take on the classic play by The New American Theatre, the same group that produced last year's acclaimed Tempest Redux. This artful adaptation of Shakespeare's darkest work stars Jack Stehlin (Weeds) and is coming to The Second Stage at Sacred Fools Theatre in Santa Monica.

"...Stehlin and his company have focused on daring contemporary adaptations in their previous "Redux" productions of Shakespeare plays - notably, "Titus Andronicus" with the title character as a victim of Iraq-Afghanistan post-traumatic stress disorder, and a shockingly downbeat "Tempest" finale tied to the Syrian refugee crisis. In comparison, "Macbeth: Revisited" is more by-the-book (albeit a shortened one) than reinterpretation. Then again, maybe a cautionary tale about sociopathic tyranny doesn't need one nowadays."

"...Stehlin presents a sturdy Macbeth, at first convincingly reluctant to heed Lady Macbeth's (Vanessa Waters) plea that he kill Duncan and accede to Scotland's throne, then later wholeheartedly throwing himself into the mayhem and his own lunacy. Waters' turn as Lady Macbeth is somewhat rushed for my taste, but she still presents a formidable presence as a woman devoted to her unholy crusade. However, Patrick Vest seems little moved as Macduff when informed of a family tragedy that would devastate even the most hardened warrior."
