Grey Gardens

Ahmanson Theatre
135 North Grand Ave Los Angeles

As The New York Times put it, Grey Gardens is "an experience no passionate theatergoer should miss." This Broadway sensation arrives at Los Angeles' Ahmanson Theatre starring Rachel York (Broadway's City of Angels) and the legendary Betty Buckley (Tony Award-winning Grizabella in Cats, Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard on Broadway and in London). In this musical based on the 1975 documentary about a pair of aging mother-and-daughter aristocrats (an aunt and first cousin of former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis) living in a dilapidated East Hampton mansion, you'll first see a recreation of the women's early years as stylish socialites, moving on to 32 years later as they continue to live in a time capsule of finery all while their mansion crumbles to pieces around them. Their majestic 42-room home, Grey Gardens, is overrun by cats, lacks running water and has been cited for repeated health code violations that threaten to have it condemned. This otherworldly musical captures all the turmoil and nostalgia of their lives in a script that aligns closely with the acclaimed documentary, as well as songs that earned the Broadway show album a Grammy nomination.
