The Wedding Singer at Morgan-Wixson Theatre

The Wedding Singer

Morgan-Wixson Theatre
2627 Pico Blvd. Santa Monica

It’s 1985, and rock star wannabe Robbie Heart (who still lives in his grandmother’s basement) is New Jersey’s favorite wedding singer. He’s the life of the party until his fiancee leaves him at the altar. Shot through the heart, Robbie is so distraught that he makes every wedding as disastrous as his own. When he meets Julia, an admiring young waitress, Robbie falls madly in love. The only problem is that Julia is about to be married to a Wall Street shark and unless Robbie can pull off the performance of a decade, the girl of his dreams will be gone forever. With a score that pays loving homage to the pop songs of the ‘80s, Morgan-Wixson Theatre’s production of The Wedding Singer takes you back to a time when hair was big, greed was good, collars were up and a wedding singer might just have been the coolest guy in the room.

Broadway World - Somewhat Recommended

"...Perhaps the biggest saving grace in the production is the entertaining choreography which fills the stage with clever, comical, and attention-grabbing costumes designed by director Mattsson and wigs designed by Alejandro Bermudez which honor the "big" outrageous mid-80s fashion trends. In fact, the talented ensemble went through more changes than I could count with nary a one missing an entrance during the many scene changes. No doubt stage manager Ashley DeFrancesco is to be credited for keeping things in order backstage."

"...Finally, the cast more than makes up for their lack of professional chops by their enthusiasm and joie de vivre. Although somewhat miscast and uneven, THE WEDDING SINGER still manages to present a light-hearted and lyrical evening which should keep your toes tapping. After all, it's always fun to revive oldie-but-goodie song and dance."

Stage Scene LA - Highly Recommended

"...Having recently spoofed the '60s with Little Shop Of Horrors, Santa Monica's Morgan-Wixson Theatre now treats audiences to the adroitly concocted blend of music, comedy, and 1980s nostalgia that is Chad Beguelin, Tim Herlihy, and Matthew Sklar's The Wedding Singer."

"...Seasoned with an electrifying 'pop' score and heaps of high-powered-and higher-stepping dance breaks, "The Wedding Singer" hearkens back to the time when hair was huge, greed was good, no wardrobe was complete without a stereo "Walkman", and the guy who sung at weddings could very well be the most bitchin' dude around!"
