Have you ever wanted to just escape the noise? Six people fleeing from city life meet in the overwhelming quiet of the woods to embark on a silent retreat in the new play Small Mouth Sounds. As these strangers confront their demons, both large and small, their vows of silence collide with the human need to connect with one another. An Off-Broadway hit, the play comes from Drama Desk Award winner Bess Wohl and is directed by Tony nominee Rachel Chavkin. Using awkward and insightful humor, this compassionate and funny work asks how we address life's biggest questions when there's no way to ask them.

"...When a play comes along that is entirely different from any play that has preceded it, especially in our era of over-informative white noise and copycatting creativity, it deserves attention. Even Small Mouth Sounds - Bess Wohl's 2016 work, now stopping at The Broad Stage in Santa Monica as part of a limited national tour - which most certainly will have quite a few people scratching their heads, wondering what it is they have just seen. No one will dismiss it out of hand because of its unfamiliarity, but some may scoff at, or be detached by, its unsatisfying resolution. Still, it comes at us looking and feeling like no other play, and provides us with the unexpected pleasure of witnessing something brand new."

Stage Raw - Highly Recommended

"...If film is primarily a visual medium, then theatre is mainly about the spoken word. The emphasis should fall upon "spoken." Plays are meant to be performed, not read. So, when playwright Bess Wohl decided to make her play Small Mouth Sounds largely silent, she was adding a level of difficulty to her endeavor. Happily, the results are a success, and the current Ars Nova production presented by the Broad Stage is both amusing and compelling."
