  Rhinoceros at Pacific Resident Theatre

Pacific Resident Theatre
703 Venice Blvd. Venice

Eugene Ionesco was the master of the Theater of the Absurd, a dramatic genre where the world is incomprehensible and anything can happen. His play Rhinoceros, at Pacific Resident Theatre in Venice, is set in a small village where the inhabitants are transforming, one by one, into rhinoceroses. Only Bérenger, the central character, seems immune to the metamorphosis. The Los Angeles Times praised Rhinoceros for its "precise comic timing and cleanly individuated characterizations." Written during the aftermath of World War II, the Ovation Recommended play served as a harsh criticism of the circumstances that led to widespread acceptance of fascism and Nazism. To this day, it remains a pointed and timely critique of conformity, mass culture and allowing society to set the definition of morality.
