The Play That Goes Wrong at Ahmanson Theatre

The Play That Goes Wrong

Ahmanson Theatre
135 North Grand Ave Los Angeles

The time is right to see The Play That Goes Wrong, the Olivier Award-winning comedy that's a hilarious hybrid of Monty Python and Sherlock Holmes. It's opening night of The Murder at Faversham Manor, and things are quickly going from bad to utterly disastrous. With an unconscious leading lady, a corpse that can't play dead, and actors who trip over everything (including their lines), it's "a riotous explosion of comedy" (The Daily Beast) and "tons of fun for all ages" (Huffpost). Find out why Ben Brantley of The New York Times called the show "a gut-busting hit" with this Center Theatre Group production at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles.

Los Angeles Times - Somewhat Recommended

"..."The Play That Goes Wrong" amuses with its pranks and pratfalls, especially for those whose brains are sitting under an umbrella on the beach. But the delight becomes something of a chore as the antics stretch on to the point that the mystery of the whodunit becomes a tiresome afterthought. Still, there's no denying the hilarity of a troupe that unfailingly turns can-do into can-don't."

"...Granted, a sizeable number of opening-night audience members found all of this funny. But a better bet would be to stay home and watch "Noises Off!" or The Three Stooges or any Austin Powers movie, and save your money for a stage production that's actually worthy of running in what should be Los Angeles' premier theater venue."

"...This is a play for everyone. Even the younger set in the audience was guffawing and giggling throughout. This is a terrific night at the theatre and will have you walking out on a silly high."

"...The trouble is, as much as an audience likes to be "in on the joke," this is mostly self-parody, so witlessly defective that you can't tell whether it had any merit in the first place. Lacking any sense of controlling standards, toxically bad theater is just, well, depressing."

"...So nonstop hilarious is the latest National Tour playing a visit to the Ahmanson, The Play That Goes Wrong just might hold the laugh-a-minute record for a West End-to-Broadway comedy smash."

On Stage Los Angeles - Highly Recommended

"...Timing, physical gags that make the audience gasp and truly terrible acting make this production out perform Noises Off! at every turn. Noises Off! used to be the standard for really silly theatre but! No longer! TPTWG is now at the top of my list and as the promo that suggests that "Monty Python meets Sherlock Holmes" isn't far from worng! For another silly reference, I mention the very silly Firesign Theatre just to see if this gets a mention in another on line venue. See this show!!"

"...Satires of the situation and plot of this dusty theatrical mystery are as old as the hills, but this spoof of a 1920s drawing room drama out-spoofs them all. Noises-off doesn't begin to encompass the chutzpah of the fictional Cornley University Drama Society production of (organ music here) "The Murder at Haversham Manor," hereinafter known as The Play That Goes Wrong. The equally fictional program notes by Chris Bean (Evan Alexander Smith), the director, voice coach, dialect coach, fight choreographer, casting director, and costume designer for the drama society are worth the price of the ticket."

Stage Raw - Somewhat Recommended

"...The Play That Goes Wrong is a British production at the Ahmanson Theatre by way of Broadway and, as the title would indicate, nearly everything goes wrong, as planned. The show is quite funny at times, with moments so hilarious youíll laugh until you cry, but itís too long and loses the comedic momentum it builds for itself."

The TVolution - Somewhat Recommended

"...The play never established a reality for me that I could then delight in going to hell in a hand basket. Nor for me was there any surprise to the show. Monty Python is funny to me because nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition."

On Stage and Screen - Recommended

"...Directed on tour by Matt DiCarlo, the cast is required to be at the top of their game, given the specific timing and advanced physical comedy the piece demands. Whether pratfalling or catching props thrown from across the stage, the disarray is immaculately choreographed. Of course, some jokes overstay their welcome, and if slapstick is not your cup of tea, you may not find certain bits laugh-out-loud funny, but the vast majority of the opening night audience sure seemed to."

"...So I say, for whatever reasons, (especially forgetting your own troubles for the night,) go see The Play That Goes Wrong. It should make you laugh, and even if it doesn't, just look around and enjoy. Mr. X laughed hard when I just told him about it!"
