Native Son

Kirk Douglas Theatre
9820 Washington Blvd. Culver City

This new theatrical adaptation of Richard Wright's seminal work brings Native Son, the classic novel about oppression, freedom and justice, bursting to life on stage as part of Block Party 2019. Bigger Thomas wants more out of life, suffocated as he is by the rat-infested world of poverty and prejudice. But his aspirations in 1930s Chicago are sidetracked when he makes a fateful decision while working for a well-to-do white family. This insightful, urgent adaptation by Nambi E. Kelley comes to Culver City's Kirk Douglas Theater as part of CTG's Block Party, courtesy of the Antaeus Theatre Company.

Broadway World - Highly Recommended

"...As Bigger and The Black Rat traverse back-and-forth across the many levels, almost as if running from cage to cage, a raging snowstorm delays their ability to escape the law, represented by Chicago native Ned Mochel as Britten, who relentlessly follows Bigger until his capture and trial. There is no doubt of the ending, and director Chapman handles its brutality with dignity and compassion due to all human beings, even though many may not agree given his violent path to get there."
