Nancy F***ing Reagan

Secret Rose Theatre
11246 Magnolia Blvd North Hollywood

Nancy F***ing Reagan ó A gay high school teacher, who is about to turn 50, needs to be cajoled by his friends to embrace the future and let go of a past he struggles with - sometimes comically Ė especially the Reagansí troubling AIDS legacy. Nancy F***ing Reagan is set in Palm Springs where Davidís best friend and college dean, Maggie, has organized a weekend getaway for a few friends to celebrate his birthday. But the death of the former First Lady that same week, provokes Davidís festering anger, reminding him how the unchecked AIDS epidemic diminished his life and left him single for so many years. The celebration is further derailed when a student from Maggieís college arrives at the house, demanding that Maggie address the ubiquitous racism on their school campus. Inspired by Allisonís audacity, the friends begin wrestling with the importance of their own racial and sexual identities. Their arguments, and the hilarious actions they take because of them, end up shifting their lives and relationships in new and un-imagined directions.

"...The performances are energetic, as they navigate serious conversations with a light touch. The set feels just like a Palm Springs getaway, with festive artwork and a table topped by wine bottles."

"...The cast as a whole is so well cast that it felt like I was eavesdropping on a weekend with friends. A particular stand out is Kiff Schol (David) as he shows us the characters whole range of emotions, clearly, authentically and convincingly. But the anchor and heart of the play belongs to Deb Tinsley (Maggie). I couldn't take my eyes off her as she embodied the heart and soul of the playwright's intentions. The direction by Larry Mango was solid and engaging. Its subject matter took me back to a time where thousands of people were dying from an insidious disease made worse by not being mentioned by the most powerful and influential couple."

"...Overall, Nancy F***ing Reagan features compelling dialogue and a strong dynamic that draws us in. The characters and their relationships are believable. The rising tension is not only effectively paced, but transfixing. While the play is blatant in its criticism of Reaganís policy on AIDS, it is also a careful and thoughtful character study that examines how this tragedy continues to affect in the lives of the individuals connected to it. Despite shortcomings in plot and structure, this play lingers in the mind ó much like the impact of AIDS still lingers today."
