  Harvey at Laguna Playhouse

Harvey

Laguna Playhouse
606 Laguna Canyon Rd. Laguna Beach

It is a spring afternoon at the Dowd family home when Elwood P. Dowd starts to introduce his imaginary friend Harvey, a six-and-a-half-foot tall rabbit, to guests at his sister Veta’s society luncheon. Horrified that the embarrassing family secret is now exposed, Veta decides to have Elwood committed to a sanitarium, but a mistake is made when Veta is committed rather than Elwood. French Stewart (“3rd Rock from the Sun,” “Mom”) and real-life wife Vanessa Claire Stewart (Laguna Playhouse’s “Keely” in Louis and Keely: Live at the Sahara) star in Mary Chase’s Pulitzer Prize-winning comedy that has everyone questioning what exactly is real, and who is really crazy? There will be Talk-Backs following the performances on Saturday, June 8 at 2pm and Thursday, June 13 at 7:30pm.

Thru - Jun 16, 2019

Stage and Cinema - Recommended

"...OK, Chase’s spoof of psychiatry is pretty familiar stuff, the love interest (between a Nurse and a young Doctor) is pure formula, and the play moves a bit more sedately than the screwball film. And maybe director Andre Barnicle’s perfect, perfect, perfect cast may be a bit too manic to make the playwright’s point of just who is crazy, but darn it if this 75-year-old warmly textured period piece with gorgeous production values doesn’t leave you warmer and fuzzier, well, than a rabbit. Hop to it."

Stage Scene LA - Highly Recommended

"...A 1950 movie adaptation may have made Elwood P. Dowd’s name synonymous with another actor surnamed Stewart, but there’s not a trace of Jimmy in his namesake’s irresistible star turn on the Laguna Playhouse stage, the L.A. theater treasure investing Elwood with the signature quirks audiences have savored since 3rd Rock From The Sun rocketed a young actor named French to TV stardom while at the same time making Elwood his own distinct, heartfelt creation."
