As a senior at St. Joseph's Prep, Brandon Hardy has the world at his feet. He is handsome, athletic, smart, and a shining example of the perfect private school student, just like his father was. But when a disturbing videotape becomes the talk of the locker room, the comfortable lives of the Hardy family threatens to shatter. Good Boys is a suspenseful drama at the Pasadena Playhouse that explores what happens when a family must separate fact from fiction — and, ultimately, choose to either preserve a legacy or risk losing everything in pursuit of the truth.

"...GOOD BOYS purposely focuses on Elizabeth, the mother of the boy in question, since she is responsible for his molding. The story is more concerned with her resolution and doesn't even bring Brandon into the final scene except through a flashback. Aguirre-Sacasa recognizes that the parents are the best filters to purify their children from bad lessons they learn from outside influences. Elizabeth understands where she's failed in her duties, and how only she can guide her son to a better adulthood. GOOD BOYS is a thought-provoking play about our past, present and unfortunately future, that will give parents a lot to ponder."

"...Good Boys is strong enough to update, and improve on, Tea and Sympathy, in which a student is accused of being gay and sleeps with an instructor's wife to prove his masculinity. Here, we see how internalized homophobia creates the thinking that it's far worse to be gay than to be a rapist. This sad and still-topical issue could be the crux of Good Boys, which has all the insights it needs. It just requires more depth."

Stage Raw - Somewhat Recommended

"...Carolyn Cantor's direction is professional if not especially distinctive, but Dane Laffrey's set creates an appropriately tony and austere ambience. The writing is the main problem with this show. It feels like a shallow dive into what should be deep waters, and its conclusions are muddled and unsatisfying. It's also very jokey and polite, as if Aguirre-Sacasa is worried about boring or offending the audience - which doesn't generally make for great theatre."

"...Although there may have been too many specific situations brought into the play, too many connected threads (some of the coincidences and connections could be trimmed), the dialogue was riveting and it was not a major factor that it was a bit lengthy and a tiny bit convoluted. The acting throughout is solid, there's good chemistry among the players, and the topics are ones that should stay in the public mind until at least some of the youth who live their lives without responsibility and consequences reclaim (or begin operating from) a sense of respect for others and simple morality."
