514 S. Spring St. Los Angeles

Found isn’t just based on a true story, it’s based on hundreds of them! When the lost and broke Davy happens to find a peculiar note meant for someone else on the windshield of his car, it sparks an outlandish idea to collect the hilarious and revealing notes and letters that surround us every day. Along with friends, Denise and Mikey D, they're quickly swept up into a wild, comedic mission to share them with the world. Inspired by Davy Rothbart’s popular Found magazine, featuring scores of actual discarded notes and letters that have been “found” in the real world by everyday people, this original musical comedy is a raucous exploration of human connection and the beautiful weirdness in all of us.

"...Found, as with Rent before it, props up the down-and-out and urges us to “be here, now,” take a chance, and connect. Through its voyeuristic qualities, it allows us to see ourselves in a parade of anonymous strangers, people who likely have no idea their words – such as “Dear Mom, summer camp isn’t fun anymore, everyone is dying” – have been published, much less featured (even sung!) onstage from NY to L.A. While this reworked mounting still could use some tweaks, by its end it’s found itself – and won us over."

"...The songs and choreography are bouncy and fun, and the idea is cute in a “Mad Lib” sort of way. Laughs abound amidst toe tapping and a generally upbeat production. A big hit in New York has crossed the continent to entertain West Coast audiences. Although a little long – with a first act which tends to drag – FOUND picks up the beat in the second act for an enjoyable and at times hilarious evening."

"...Kudos go too to musical directors Frank Galgano and Matt Castle, the latter of whom conducts and plays keyboards in Found's rock-concert-ready four-piece band*, with Cricket S. Myers providing her accustomed expert sound design mix aided by sound engineer Hannah Cairo."

Stage Raw - Somewhat Recommended

"...When the focus is on Davy and the other main characters, I was left wanting. The dramatic thrust of the piece has little impact because the character beats are so cliché and generic that the next plot point can be seen from a mile away. In these moments, it’s easy to yearn to return to the notes, which are funny in a completely unpredictable way. But there can be too much of a good thing, and as the show wears through note after note after note set to music, it’s easy to wish for a more consequential story, rather than sequences of segments that have little narrative impact. Triteness aside, the issue is primarily one of balance — the text feels like distinct chunks of story, then notes, then story, etc, rather than notes gracefully interwoven with story."
