Broadway World- Highly Recommended

"...The much-anticipated North American Tour of the Lincoln Center Theater Broadway production of FALSETTOS, now at the Ahmanson through May 19, marks a happy reunion for composer/lyricist William Finn and playwright/director James Lapine whose new one-act musical "March of the Falsettos" premiered in 1981. The story of a gay man named Marvin, his lover Whizzer, Marvin's wife Trina, son Jason and their psychiatrist Mendel, was a critical success both on and Off-Broadway. Fast forward to 1990, when a second new musical by Finn and Lapine, "Falsettoland" opened, providing a continuation of the story of Marvin and his extended family in the early days of the AIDS crisis. Rave reviews again abounded."

"...This is one of the greatest American musicals in the canon, yet I was shocked to discover that no one among the dozens and dozens of aficionados I spoke to at last nightís opening had ever seen it before. Fortunately for them and the hushed, attentive, crowd who knew they were in the presence of a miracle, this is the best production Iíve seen of all the incarnations which led up to William Finn and James Lapineís Tony Award-winning musical. This Lincoln Center outing at the Ahmanson Theatre is part of a ridiculously short national tour through June 30, but fortunately, you have until May 19 in Los Angeles to catch the power, humor and pathos of these very lovable, imperfect, neurotic people who struggle to survive day-to-day life without breaking down as they march along."

Stage Scene LA- Highly Recommended

"...A freshly out New Yorkerís life before and after the AIDS epidemic wreaked havoc on his city makes for the most unlikely of Broadway musicals, and one of the most richly rewarding, in Falsettos, now moving audience to laughter through tears at the Ahmanson."

"...Falsettos is a master class in acting modulation. The characters are self-involved, sometimes violent, energy vampires. An actor must be true to author William Finnís vision of Marvin and his clan, revealing warts and all, but compel the audience to accept and forgive those who need eons of therapy. A wise actor can create a Marvin who is vicious and complicated and snippy but loving and nurturing and lost. But can even the most nuanced actor, which Max Von Essen clearly is, make audiences forgive such a toxic male in these hopefully more enlightened ages?
