The Elephant Man Mar 21 - Apr 14, 2019
El Portal Theatre The Elephant Man

“In 2011, I contracted the Bell's Palsy virus. The entire left side of my face was paralyzed. I had to tape my left eye open during the day, and tape it shut at night. My nose was being pulled across my face by the strong muscles on the right side, and that made my left nostril collapse. I would drool and slur my speech. Out in public during the early stage of this condition; I was met by sympathetic looks, gasps, and a few mean spirited passing comments. But one comment stuck; "Hey, it's the Elephant Man"! Those words never left me, and what was meant as an insult became a gift that made me discover “ The Elephant Man”, a play by Bernard Pomerance. The relevance and power of his play continues to deepen four decades after its debut. Needless to say, I did not choose this play, oddly enough it chose me, and I am grateful.”

La Traviata Jun 1 - Jun 22, 2019
Dorothy Chandler Pavilion La Traviata

There's a reason that Verdi's tragic romance La Traviata is one of the most popular operas on the planet. Of course, there's the music, with exquisite arias like "Sempre libera" and the mournful "Addio del passato." Then there's the bittersweet love story of the beautiful, pleasure-loving yet frail courtesan Violetta (played by soprano Adela Zaharia), who unexpectedly finds true (and ultimately tragic) love with a younger man. But above all, what sets La Traviata in a league of its own is its humanity and its heart. It's a truly timeless tale of moral hypocrisy and selfless sacrifice, and in the character of Violetta, Verdi has given us one of opera's most fascinating heroines, a woman of boundless humanity and emotional depth. Now LA Opera brings this iconic 1853 opera to the stage -- and you can get tickets first with this exclusive pre-sale.
