  American Idiot at Cupcake Theater

American Idiot

Cupcake Theater
11020 Magnolia Blvd. N. Hollywood

Broadway was rocked like it'd never been rocked before when Green Day's American Idiot arrived in 2010. Based on the band's Grammy-winning (and platinum-selling) concept album of the same name, this high-energy, Tony-winning rock opera uses the songs from the album plus several from its follow-up release, 21st Century Breakdown, to drive the story. Three lifelong friends -- Johnny, Will and Tunny -- must navigate the aimless drift of suburbia in a post-9/11 world. But fear, war and drugs soon prove to be easier choices than freedom, which leads to the erosion of their friendship and dreams. With its timely-as-ever examination of the hearts of young Americans craving purpose in a cynical world, American Idiot now brings its electrifying punk rock pulse to the Cupcake Theater in North Hollywood. This show is recommended for mature audiences.

Broadway World - Recommended

"...But the story is really a moot point. AMERICAN IDIOT is all about the high-energy covers of all the Green Day songs you know and love. The songs are packed so tightly together, you can forgive yourself if you pay absolutely no attention to the script. To quote Michael Pettenato, the show's producer and Cupcake Studios' Artistic Director, "Just let everything hit you like an emotional wave. Don't worry about picking up every nuance of the story.""

Edge - Somewhat Recommended

"...Tackling such a hefty theme as "What happened to the American Dream?" is lofty and ambitious, but the story of "American Idiot" never takes off, despite great songs, singers, and dancers. In the end, the slackers it portrays are too slack to be riveting."

Stage Scene LA - Highly Recommended

"...Cupcake Theater follows its family-friendly welcome-back-to-the-sixties Hairspray revival with the sex, drugs, and rock-and-roll of Green Day's American Idiot, every bit the crowd-pleaser of its predecessor (but with parental discretion advised)."
