Albert Herring
135 N. Grand Avenue Los Angeles
Charming tenor Alek Schrader makes his LA Opera debut as the virginal Albert Herring, a young mama's boy who becomes the "King of the May" for his village. The honor typically goes to a fair local maiden, but alas, Albert is the only innocent to be found this year. After some overindulgence in "liquid courage" at his coronation ceremony, Albert finally finds the nerve to seek out adventure for himself. Despite the lighthearted nature of the plot and the genuinely funny text, Albert Herring is musically complex and was proclaimed "the greatest comic opera of the century" by Ukrainian pianist Sviatoslav Richter. LA Opera makes it more accessible to audiences by presenting the English-language work with the text projected onto a screen.
