A Walk In The Woods

Actors Co-op Theatre
1760 N. Gower Street Hollywood

Lee Blessing's Pulitzer- and Tony Award-nominated drama A Walk in the Woods comes to Hollywood's Actors Co-op Theatres to reflect on a historical event that seems more timely than ever. Two superpower arms negotiators -- one a clever, cynical Russian and the other an idealistic young American -- meet for informal walks in the woods outside Geneva after long, frustrating hours at the bargaining table. This 1988 play was inspired by the true story of two passionate men who had the courage to forge a nuclear weapons agreement without the support of their governments. Filled with unexpected humor and extraordinary humanity, it's an absorbing, revealing and brilliant debate on the eternal hope and relentless futility of high-stakes politics.

Broadway World - Highly Recommended

"...Thanks to the skill of McNamara and Crowley, Blessing's intensely written banter is presented in such an honest and truthful manner that it was easy to forget this was not a word-for-word transcription of the actual dialog between the two real-life negotiators. The two skilled actors know how to listen and pull us into what is going on in their characters hearts and heads as well as the words being spoken, making the play a fascinating character study, acknowledged by Time Magazine as one of the best dramas to hit the stage in 1998."

LA Splash - Highly Recommended

"...When two arms negotiators were deadlocked in talks in Geneva and decided to take a walk in a peaceful copse nearby, the idea for A WALK IN THE WOODS was born. Playwright Lee Blessing took this intriguing event and wove a brilliant and witty tale of what might have happened between the American and Russian negotiators on this fateful stroll. From a staged reading in 1986, A WALK IN THE WOODS was produced on Broadway in 1988 and was eventually nominated for both a Pulitzer Prize and a Tony Award. Playwright Lee Blessing's formidable play has been revived and infused with new life in the Actor's Co-op 2018 production."

Stage Scene LA - Highly Recommended

"...No longer just a nostalgic look back at a time when terms like “early warning” seemed things of the past, A Walk In The Woods is yet another Actors Co-op winner, and more relevant than ever."

Night Tinted Glasses - Recommended

"...Like many a work about an apocalypse, even a looming one, this play softens the horror with humor. Good thing, too. In many ways this becomes Honeyman's story of bitter disillusionment, of her holding on all the same. The interplay of these opponents gradually grows into precisely what she said it must never be--a friendship. As that happens, the issues behind and (horrifically) above those of the dangers involved emerge. We should leave the theatre depressed. Interestingly, we don't, but we hopefully avoid complacence."

Stage Raw - Somewhat Recommended

"...McNamara, cool, crisp and superbly poised, is excellent as Honeyman, but Crowley undermines the production with a shtick-laden performance that strips the play of any meaningful weight. More than a lapse in performance, it’s a surprise fumble from Sawyer, a usually assured directorial hand."

Accessibly Live Off-Line - Highly Recommended

"...A WALK IN THE WOODS as produced by Actors Co-Op is a great performance. Although Russia is no longer the treat as they once were, that doesn't mean that the so-call "cold war" is total done and over with. There are other nations that are stockpiling their "toys", and they are willing to play with them all! If they eventually do, then that's going to be another incident to face, far away from any stage! Stay tuned!"

Haines His Way - Highly Recommended

"...When Lee Blessing’s A Walk in the Woods was first produced in 1988, the Berlin Wall and the Soviet Union were both still intact. Arms negotiations between the world’s two superpowers seemed to be happening continuously for decades, with a new agreement on limiting nuclear weapons every couple of years. But as soon as one treaty was signed, new and better weapons were being developed on both sides."

Discover Hollywood - Highly Recommended

"...This performance will captivate you from start to finish. Actors Co-op Theatre Company's production of this Pulitzer Prize Finalist and Tony Award nominated drama is brought to life by Phil Crowley and Nan McNamara. This dynamic duo dives into the characters of the Russian negotiator Andrey Botvinnik (endearingly and pointedly portrayed by Mr Crowley) and his American counterpart Joan Honeyman (played by the strict and cooly controlled Nan McNamara)."
