Serial Killer Barbie Reviews

"...If you're into the slash-and-spatter genre, you may find the title of "Serial Killer Barbie" at the NoHo Arts Center a bit of a misnomer. The belated slayings seem designed more to accommodate the attention-grabbing concept rather than as an organic progression of plot. However, if you can ignore the occasional unwieldiness of Colette Freedman's book, which includes an awkward framing device that should be immediately jettisoned, you may find this world premiere musical at the Noho Arts Center a very hot ticket indeed."

"...Unfortunately, the book and score sometimes seem mired in their own case of dramaturgic ADHD. The nonstop barrage of boisterous scenes, similar-sounding songs and frantic dances begin to blur, and the shtick overload becomes as dizzying as a marathon Facebook session. The narrative starts feeling superfluous amid the melee."

"...The season's brightest, bounciest, and most crowd-pleasing musical surprise turns out to be Colette Freedman and Nickella Moschetti's Serial Killer Barbie, hardly the splatter fest its catchy albeit misleading title might suggest, but a show that anyone who's gone through the 12 rounds that are Elementary, Middle, and High School can identify with and cheer."

"...There is great music by Nickella Moschetti, excellent dancing choreographed by Anne-Marie Osgood, and hilarious lyrics and story by Collette Freedman. Ronnie Marmo directs what turns out to be a delightfully whimsical look a the life of a kid from 6 to 17."

"...What a hoot! A highly entertaining, wildly whacky musical, with a lot of heart, and a ton of laughs intermingled… this one is a MUST SEE!"

"..."Serial Killer Barbie" is full of original music, including the vigilante-esque "21 Ways To Kill A Debbie," and the ever relatable "Middle School Sucks." Dorney, Jacoby, Maley, and Coppola all wow the audience with their powerhouse vocals. Each of them has incredible range, volume, and control. Maley especially stands out with her ability to sing in her lower register and maintain that vibrancy as she switches to higher notes. The ladies pack immense power into such an intimate space, yet never overwhelm the audience."

"...If you're a fan of pop hits from the 1970s and 1980s, the songs in "Serial Killer Barbie" will seem like a dream weekend on an oldies radio station. Composer Nickella Moschetti has written several numbers for the world premiere musical, now at the NoHo Arts Center, with the pleasant bounce and instantly satisfying melodies that sold millions in their day."
