Salome

Dorothy Chandler Pavilion
135 N. Grand Avenue Los Angeles

Richard Strauss' opera Salome, based on Oscar Wilde's scandalous play, has dazzled audiences since its 1905 opening night, which drew the likes of Mahler and Puccini. It also created a sensation when it was first staged in LA Opera's inaugural season, and now returns to make its mark on the 21st century at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, starring Patricia Racette in the role of a lifetime. This darkly dramatic opera tells the biblical story of the disturbed temptress whose sensuous advances are rejected by the prophet John the Baptist, with tragic consequences. Strauss' lush score includes the classic "Dance of the Seven Veils." James Conlon conducts the epic, opulent score, revered worldwide as a true orchestral showpiece.
