A Chicago Christmas Carol

Crown City Theatre Company
11031 Camarillo Street North Hollywood

Crown City Theatre Company presents a revamped, rejuvenated, revival of their 2008 production of “A Chicago Christmas Carol.” Book writer William A. Reilly, and Lyricist Gary Lamb has once again fused their innovative talents to create a Holiday classic. With the help of new Director (Brent Beerman), Assistant Director (Ben Rovner), and Assistant Musical Director (Kathi Chaplar), new songs have been added and new scenes have been written. ”A Chicago Christmas Carol” is the merging of two classic novels, Upton Sinclair’s “The Jungle”, and Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol”. Set in the harsh reality of 1908 Chicago on a particularly cold and windy Christmas Eve, streetwalkers, the homeless and even Scrooge are in for a rough night. In this production Gary Lamb helms the piece as Ebenezer Scrooge, a despicable owner of a loan establishment that preys on the workers of his own Slaughterhouse. Because of the mature nature of this production we recommend it to audiences 10 and older.

  Review Round-Up

LA Weekly - Highly Recommended

"...The cast of 13 is well-costumed by Tanya Apuya and Caitlin Erin O'Hare, but less well served by the tame choreography and unimaginative, unambitious songs, one of which ("Memories Past") borrows liberally from "Baby It's Cold Outside." Yet Paton Ashbrook as Scrooge's intended, Isabella, shares a lovely duet with him in "When We Are Wed" and Sadie Calvano shines as the little girl cast onto the street."

"...There will be Christmas Carols aplenty this season, but none quite like A Chicago Christmas Carol, a fascinating look back at a time when money-grubbing moguls shared the same city streets with victims of abject poverty. Sound familiar?"

The Tolucan Times - Highly Recommended

"...My first holiday play of the season, magically setting the mood for the wonders of Christmas… this is a beautifully staged, highly entertaining, must-see production! Presented by Crown City Theatre, this is a newly cast, cleverly revised version of their 2008 production about Scrooge and the colorful characters who change him forever. This is a dedicated and inventive NoHo troupe, offering one fine play after another. Here, if a character is written as despicable, they will see to it that we hate him… if they offer a musical, you can count on great singers… and if they stage a comedy, we are guaranteed uproarious laughter! You must get to know them and their innovative, well-thought out work!"

Socal - Highly Recommended

"...The hybrid script is smartly adapted and well-written by William A. Reilly. There are changes to the story, of course, but you should experience them on your own. The music, by Gary Lamb, adds a special layer to the production. The stage direction and costumes are equally impressive. But what really makes this play worth seeing, even during the hectic holiday season, is the cast. It’s a large, enthusiastic cast with top notch acting and impressive voices."
