An Incident At The Border

Edgemar Center for the Arts
2437 Main St. Santa Monica

Olivia and Arthur are sharing some time together in the park when they’re interrupted by a man in uniform, who uses a roll of tape to bifurcate the bench upon which they are sitting. The relations between two neighboring countries have become hostile, borders are being redrawn, and Arthur suddenly finds himself in a different country from Olivia, on the other end of the shared bench. When Arthur attempts to join Olivia, he is stopped by the guard, who asks for his papers which, naturally, he doesn’t have, the borders having been newly drawn. Olivia expects Arthur to assert himself and join her anyway. But can he? There are, after all, two opposing armed forces to thwart him. Will Arthur and Olivia ever be together again? An Incident at the Border is a dark absurdist comedy satirizing international as well as interpersonal relationships.

  Review Round-Up

LA Weekly - Not Recommended

"...As a metaphor for a bankrupt marriage, the conceit delivers some pointed ironies, but it exhausts its comic incongruities far, far too quickly. Director Tracy Woodward’s indifferent staging and an anemic production design prove unable to take up the slack."

Backstage - Recommended

"...Understanding and not overworking Lynn’s dryly English sense of humor is essential here, and director Tracy Woodward educes two notable and one serviceable performance from his players."

Examiner - Recommended

"...With shades of Albee’s ‘Zoo Story,’ ‘An Incident at the Border’ takes place completely in a park setting, intensely driven by rich, dynamic dialogue, impeccably delivered by all three actors."
