Oy

The Ivy Substation
9070 Venice Blvd Culver City

The Actors' Gang and its founding artistic director Tim Robbins celebrate the company's 30th anniversary with the U.S. premiere of Oy, by famed French playwright Hélène Cixous, directed by her acclaimed countryman Georges Bigot and performed in English. Based on Cixous' own family members, it's the emotionally compelling story of a pair of elderly Parisian sisters, Jewish survivors of Nazi Europe, who're asked to visit their German hometown to relay their experiences to the younger generation. But they return to find their trip has stirred up a dark cloud of memories and emotions, as well as a harsh look at the state of institutionalized racism today. Though not well known in the U.S., Cixous is an influential French feminist writer, poet, playwright, philosopher, literary critic and professor who's published more than 70 works, and both she and director Bigot have long been associated with Paris' respected avant-garde ensemble, Le Théâtre du Soleil.
