Sleeping Ugly

Santa Monica Playhouse
1211 4th Street Santa Monica

Two-time Oscar nominated show business legend Arnold Schulman’s delightfully humorous, intensely romantic world premiere adult fairytale about love and lust, longing and belonging, sex and sensibility, parents and pediatrics, and the passion and pain of living with a werewolf - a marvelously funny, touchingly ironic joyous adult cartoon come to larger-than-life that takes audiences on a wild ride, combining the Playhouse’s signature Commedia-Circus style with physical theatrix, multi-media design and live underscore.

  Review Round-Up

Los Angeles Times - Recommended

"...All of this clever business, lovingly directed by the playhouse’s other artistic director, Chris DeCarlo, might distract from a more focused drama, but “Sleeping Ugly” is playful, incoherent fun."

Backstage - Somewhat Recommended

"...The show has its moments, and Schulman’s gift for snappy dialogue regularly crops up, but “Sleeping Ugly” ultimately seems more suited to the small screen than the small stage."

ReviewPlays.com - Recommended

"...These actors perform as the scenery, the props, the doors, etc., and sometimes take on the part of some of the characters involved in the lives of Judy and Stanley. With unusual makeup and cardboard props, they move slowly around the stage into the most unbelievable positions. This feat is accomplished by a combination of the Playhouse’s signature Commedia-Circus style with mock Japanese Kabuki, and physical theatrix under the direction of Serena Dolinsky. Evelyn Rudie supplies the ideal sound effects."
